Background of the Study

Workplace bullying in healthcare settings is a significant concern, impacting not only the well-being of nurses but also the quality of patient care. Bullying can manifest as verbal abuse, intimidation, or undermining behaviors, leading to increased stress, job dissatisfaction, and turnover among nursing staff.

IOSR Journals

In Nigeria, studies have indicated a high prevalence of workplace violence against health workers. For instance, research conducted in a Nigerian tertiary hospital reported that 88.1% of health workers had experienced workplace violence, with nurses being particularly vulnerable.

Despite these findings, there is limited research focusing specifically on nurses' perceptions of workplace bullying in tertiary hospitals within Kaduna State. Understanding these perceptions is crucial for developing effective interventions to mitigate bullying and promote a healthier work environment.

Statement of the Problem

Workplace bullying among nurses can lead to adverse outcomes, including decreased job performance, low morale, and compromised patient care. In tertiary hospitals in Kaduna State, the extent and nature of workplace bullying, as perceived by nurses, remain underexplored. This gap in knowledge hinders the development of targeted strategies to address the issue and support nursing staff effectively.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence of workplace bullying as perceived by nurses in tertiary hospitals in Kaduna State.
  2. To identify common forms of bullying experienced by nurses in these settings.
  3. To explore the perceived impact of workplace bullying on nurses' job performance and well-being.
  4. To recommend strategies for preventing and managing workplace bullying in tertiary healthcare institutions.

Research Questions

  1. How prevalent is workplace bullying among nurses in tertiary hospitals in Kaduna State?
  2. What are the common forms of bullying perceived by nurses in these hospitals?
  3. How does workplace bullying affect nurses' job performance and personal well-being?
  4. What measures can be implemented to prevent and manage workplace bullying in these settings?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Workplace bullying is prevalent among nurses in tertiary hospitals in Kaduna State.
  2. Verbal abuse and intimidation are the most common forms of bullying experienced by these nurses.
  3. There is a significant negative relationship between workplace bullying and nurses' job performance and well-being.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on nurses employed in tertiary hospitals within Kaduna State. It examines their perceptions of workplace bullying, its forms, and its impact on their professional and personal lives. Limitations may include potential response bias and the study's restriction to tertiary hospitals, which may limit the generalizability of the findings to other healthcare settings.

Definitions of Terms

  • Workplace Bullying: Repeated, health-harming mistreatment of an employee by one or more employees, including behaviors such as verbal abuse, offensive conduct, and work interference.
  • Tertiary Hospitals: Advanced medical care facilities offering specialized treatments and services, typically affiliated with medical schools or research institutions.
